Distinct Surface Warming Response Over the Western and Eastern Equatorial Pacific to Radiative Forcing

چکیده

This study examines regional characteristics of atmospheric and oceanic feedback processes in the western eastern equatorial Pacific, by applying a localized surface heating respective region hierarchy climate models. A Pacific forcing is largely offset negative shortwave cloud radiative effect damping via wind-evaporation-SST feedback. In contrast, an forcing, while being partially compensated for ocean dynamical adjustments, induces amplified warming extending to central due weak local mechanisms. As inter-model spread future tropical pattern, heat uptake response east can explain much both on fast (<5 years) slow (>100 timescales. Our results suggest that “El Niño-like” pattern probable increasing greenhouse gases owing strong intrinsic Pacific.

Response of the Equatorial Pacific Seasonal Cycle to Orbital Forcing

The response of the equatorial Pacific Ocean’s seasonal cycle to orbital forcing is explored using idealized simulations with a coupled atmosphere–ocean GCM in which eccentricity, obliquity, and the longitude of perihelion are altered while other boundary conditions are maintained at preindustrial levels. The importance of ocean dynamics in the climate response is investigated using additional ...

Climate Response of the Equatorial Pacific to Global Warming

The climate response of the equatorial Pacific to increased greenhouse gases is investigated using numerical experiments from 11 climate models participating in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Fourth Assessment Report. Multimodel mean climate responses to CO2 doubling are identified and related to changes in the heat budget of the surface layer. Weaker ocean surface currents dri...

Effects of surface forcing on the seasonal cycle of the eastern equatorial Pacific

The roles of zonal and meridional wind stress and of surface heat flux in the seasonal cycle of sea surface temperature (SST) are examined with a primitive equation (PE) model of the tropical Pacific Ocean. While a variety of previous numerical and observational studies have examined the seasonal cycle of SST in the eastern tropical Pacific, it is noteworthy that different mechanisms have been ...

Climate Change over the Equatorial Indo-Pacific in Global Warming*

The response of the equatorial Indian Ocean climate to global warming is investigated using model outputs submitted to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report. In all of the analyzed climate models, the SSTs in the western equatorial Indian Ocean warm more than the SSTs in the eastern equatorial Indian Ocean under global warming; the mean SST gradient acros...

A Numerical Investigation of the Local Ocean Response to Westerly Wind Burst Forcing in the Western Equatorial Pacific

Numerical simulations of the local equatorial ocean response to idealized westerly wind burst (WWB) forcing are described. In particular, the authors examine the development and evolution of the subsurface westward jet (SSWJ) that has been observed to accompany these wind events. This westward current is interpreted as the signature of equatorial waves that accompany the downwelling and upwelli...
